May 28th, Polyrhythms Jazz presents “The Laurence Hobgood Trio” at 5pm in concert featuring pianist, Laurence Hobgood, bassist, Matt Clohesy and Jared Schonig on drums at the Sound Conservatory, 1600 2nd Avenue, Rock Island, IL.
“In rare company, the likes of Bill Bell and Willie Pickens, as performers who have been very instrumental in helping Polyrhythms keep the Quad Cities connected to the Jazz world, is Laurence Hobgood,” said Nate Lawrence. “A virtuoso pianist, his playing is way past anything I could say about it. We feel very fortunate to have had the pleasure of his performances at our programs as well as his friendship over these many years.”
“We first met Laurence Hobgood when he appeared with Kurt Elling at our Third Sunday Jazz Workshop & Matinee Series in 2007 and helped us appreciate the quality of education and excellence,” said Nate Lawrence. “In 2013, he returned with the Laurence Hobgood Quintet, featuring the great Ernie Watts on sax and a young Marquis Hill on trumpet. And in 2014, along with the acclaimed vocalist Tammy McCann, he helped us launch our inaugural Jazz & Heritage Festival. And in 2017 he helped Polyrhythms celebrate ‘the gift of the piano.’ His skills and his friendship have always been timely and genuine.”
In 2017, Polyrhythms was especially pleased in a collaboration with QC Arts that brought Laurence Hobgood, a jazz artist from New York, NY. A contemporary virtuoso pianist, collaborator, composer, arranger, producer, educator, Laurence Hobgood has enjoyed a self-motivated career. Recognized for his dazzling piano technique and his signature style of composing and arranging, he’s been transporting audiences both at home and abroad for over thirty five years.
In 2018, pianist Laurence Hobgood joined by bassist, Matt Clohesy and Jared Schonig on drums, brought what Howard Reich described as “a trio that exhibits “…power without noise, energy without haste, drama without overstatement.”
Once best known for his collaboration with multiple Grammy nominee and 2010 Grammy winner vocalist Kurt Elling, Laurence Hobgood has enjoyed a multi-faceted and dynamic career. Musical director for Elling since 1995 Hobgood played on, composed/arranged for and co-produced all of Elling’s CDs (6 for Blue Note and 3 for Concord), each Grammy nominated. 2009’s “Dedicated To You: Kurt Elling Sings The Music Of Coltrane and Hartman”, recorded live at Lincoln Center, won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Vocal Jazz Record.
Hobgood was awarded three consecutive fellowships (‘90, ’91, and ’92) to perform in the Aspen Music Festival. The Chicago Tribune honored him as a 1995 Chicagoan of the Year in the Arts. In 2003 he received a Deems Taylor Award given by ASCAP for the year’s outstanding music journalism for his article, “The Art Of The Trio,” published by JazzTimes Magazine.
Hobgood has performed with his own groups, Kurt Elling and others at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Ozawa Hall at Tanglewood, Chicago’s Symphony Center and Ravinia, Sydney Opera House, London’s Barbican and Queen Elizabeth Halls, as well as the world’s most prestigious jazz festivals. Hobgood also appeared with Elling at the 2009 State Dinner where President Obama welcomed India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
He has played and/or recorded with Larry Coryell, Lee Konitz, John Patitucci, Jon Hendricks, Regina Carter, Stefon Harris, Arturo Sandoval, Richard Galliano, Christian McBride, Esperanza Spaulding, Terreon Gully, Terrence Blanchard, Bob Sheppard, Ernie Watts, Marc Johnson, Joe Lovano, Benny Maupin, Paul Wertico, Bobby Watson, Clark Terry, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Anat Cohen, Bob Mintzer, Mark Murphy, Von Freeman, Peter Erskine, Paul McCandless, Gary Burton and Eddie Daniels, among others.
